Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) introduced their clean energy and climate bill: the "Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act of 2009." This bill (S. 1733) is a positive first step to kick off the climate debate in the Senate, but we have to fight to keep it that way and to define what the Senate does with the billions of dollars generated by putting a cap on global warming pollution -and that's where you come in.
Call your senators today-toll free-and tell them to support a bold climate and energy bill. When you call your senators, tell them we need:
- Steep cuts in global warming pollution;
- Provisions that crack down on old, dirty coal power plants;
- Ensure that the billions of dollars generated by a cap on global warming pollution are invested in things such as clean technologies, green jobs training, adaptation, and avoided deforestation.
Why call? Can't I just send an email? Emails are great, but a call is worth a thousand emails! Calls are more personal and more noticeable than emails because staffers have to deal with them in real time. Senate offices keep close tabs on constituent calls and those tallies can influence votes.
Never called your senators before? Don’t worry -- it’s really easy. Simply enter your information on the right, click 'submit' and follow the instructions. If you call after hours, leave a message. Senate offices do listen to their messages and count every call.
